POTSDAM -- A former Clarkson University engineering faculty member and his wife have created an environmental engineering professorship at the school.

James and Joan Edzwald of Potsdam have provided a gift to create the James K. Edzwald Professorship in Environmental Engineering, the university has announced.

This professorship will be awarded to a tenured faculty member in recognition of significant research, teaching excellence and scholarly achievements in drinking water treatment.

James Edzwald was a member of the Clarkson civil engineering faculty from 1974 to 1984. His career has included positions at the University of Massachusetts and the University of Missouri. He is editor of Water Quality & Treatment: A Handbook on Drinking Water, now in its sixth edition and long considered the seminal book on water quality and treatment resources.

His research and consulting has significantly impacted the design and operation of water plants around the world. He is currently advising on water facilities in Canada and the United States. Many of his former graduate students are senior engineers and leaders of major environmental engineering companies.

Joan Edzwald taught in schools in Potsdam and Glenwood, Md. She holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland and a master of science from SUNY Potsdam.

Commenting on Edzwald’s 40-year relationship with Clarkson, university president Tony Collins said "His vision for the future of environmental engineering, combined with a passion for water treatment research, has enabled us to develop a strong program with a focus on our students and their potential. Jim has helped launch many careers and his life’s work has impacted millions across the globe. Clarkson is honored to carry forward his work and benefit future generations in his name."

“It is important for excellent faculty to be recognized for their scholarly work," said James Edzwald. "It is wonderful that Clarkson through this professorship will be able to honor faculty who are making significant improvements in drinking water quality around the globe."

The announcement from the university emphasizes that the creation of this professorship offers the opportunity for colleagues and former students of Edzwald to honor him and his achievements with a gift to the fund.
