Second half surge lifts Skidmore men's basketball past Knights

Potsdam, NY - Despite lackluster shooting performances, both Aldin Medunjanin and Erik Sanders posted double-doubles for Skidmore and the Thoroughbreds' defense held the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team to a season-worst 30.6% shooting performance as the Golden Knights lost a 63-46 decision on Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League while Skidmore improved to 5-0 in conference play and 8-5 overall.

Though neither team was particularly hot from the jump, it took more than five minutes for Clarkson to score its first field goal. Skidmore took advantage of the early misses by Clarkson and built a double-digit midway through the first half, expanding it to as many as 12 points with less than four minutes to go in the period. Senior John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) missed his first four attempts from the floor, but then made his next five to help the Knights get back into the game as Clarkson trailed by just seven at the break despite shooting only 31.0% (9-for-29) from the floor.

The Knights stayed within striking distance, behind by only eight after the first six minute expired in the second half, but Skidmore began to make its long distance shots after going without a 3-pointer in the first half, and the Thoroughbreds were able to extend their lead. Each time it appeared as if Clarkson might be able to get back within the game with a small run, Skidmore would get a key perimeter shot to push the advantage back above double figures or into the low teens.

Coleman finished with a game-high 17 points, going 7-for-14 from the floor, and added 11 rebounds. Felix Abongo (Beacon, NY) added in 13 points and six rebounds. Besides Coleman's 50.0% performance, the rest of the team shot just 8-for-35 (22.9%).

Erik Sanders finished with 17 points, but shot just 5-for-16 from the floor, and 10 boards while Aldin Medunjanin added 15 points, going 4-for-14 from the floor, and 11 rebounds. Connor Merrill tossed in 10 points and Perun Kovacevic produced seven points and 10 boards, including six on the offensive end.
