Drivers need to watch out for Amish buggies, says Hammond woman

To the Editor:

A friend of mine was hit by a car recently. The driver who hit him was reportedly racing along county Route 6 just like many of the drivers using the Black Lake Road. They don't care about the hills or double lines and I can see by my own experience the way they think those roads belong to only them and they all want to be Nascar drivers.

My friend was hit so hard that there was literally nothing left of his vehicle in one piece, except a wheel. He was propelled out of his vehicle, still sitting in the seat.

He is lucky that someone was watching over him, because the driver certainly was not. The driver hit him on a section of CR 6 that was in no way blinded or hidden. He was 100 yards from his home where his young wife and two little children were waiting for him.

Yes, my friend is Amish and neither he nor his community should have to fear travelling on public roads. There are signs warning of buggy travel, not enough it seems for the ignorant, selfish race car drivers needing to get nowhere, fast.

Just like the article on page 4 of the June 4-10 issue telling of another Amish buggy on State Highway 68.

Being a small car (sometimes buggy) driver I am constantly plagued by impatient drivers trying to run me over because I am doing the speed limit. When I'm in my buggy, I don’t drive in the potholes on the side, I keep to my lane and have every right to do so.

The driver who hit my friend not only needs their hand slapped, this person needs to be charged with attempted manslaughter.

She should be paying for a new buggy and to replace the lovely horse that lost its life due to her carelessness! If it were up to me, she would never be allowed another license to drive.

Neither she, the woman who hit the man on SH 68 or any other driver hitting an Amish buggy should ever be allowed to get behind a killing machine.
