Pro Musica Chorus of Ogdensburg recently selected the winners of the 2016 scholarships.
The 2016 scholarships were given to Jaelin Calkins of Heuvelton Central School, Kaitlyn Barse of Lisbon Central School, Joshua Reed of Madrid-Waddington Central School, Allyssa Sabre of Madrid-Waddington Central School and Angelina Aslanyan of Morristown Central School. Dana McCormick of Ogdensburg Free Academy received the 2016 Bibbens Scholarship.
Calkins will attend SUNY Canton to study veterinary technology.
Barse has enrolled at Jefferson Community College in liberal arts, with emphasis in mathematics and sciences, and may pursue a degree in nursing.
Reed will enroll as a freshman at SUNY Potsdam with an undeclared major.
Sabre plans to concentrate on psychology at SUNY Potsdam.
Aslanyan has been accepted at the Albany College of Pharmacy.
McCormick will attend SUNY Fredonia to study illustration and design.
The 2016 scholarships were given to graduating seniors who “have shown excellence in choral music,” according to a press release. The seniors were recommended by their choral music teachers.
The Bibbens scholarship is awarded to a student who is graduating from OFA “who has shown excellence in choral music during his or her high school years,” the release said. The scholarship is given annually in memory of Sally Bibbens, the Pro Musica Chorus founder and director, to reward and encourage participation in choral music in school and in life.
Pro Musica also encourages elementary age children to participate in choral music. Recent concerts included approximately fifteen young singers chosen by their music teachers from the city elementary schools.
It is the hope that the scholarship recipients and other young singers will become future members of Pro Musica of Ogdensburg, or will join a choral group in the communities where they live.
Funds for the scholarships are raised from member dues and proceeds from the annual spring and Christmas concerts.
