CANTON — More than $40,000 was raised for the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund with Walk/Run for Life events in Canton and Potsdam Sunday morning, April 27.
Due to snow and rain, the 47th Annual Edward I. Moses Walk/Run for Life was held inside St. Lawrence University’s Newell Field House, rather than outside around the campus.
Despite the weather, the Canton event drew 65 walkers, who brought in $13,000. Local businesses contributed an additional $28,000 for the local charity.
Many of the participants have been coming to the Wallk/Run for Life for years, in memory of loved ones who have been diagnosed with cancer, said Dick Christy, President of the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund.
Diane Currier said she was there in memory of her husband, Randy Currier, who died of liver cancer a month after they were married. She was also there for her father, Eugene Bryant, and her daughter Amanda Selleck.
A family from Rochester, Kevin and Marietta Hartson and Victoria and Jaden Presher, have come for many years, walking in memory of Doug Hartson, a Winthrop resident.
Jim Moses, son of Edward I. Moses, a past president of Kinney Drugs, thanked the Cancer Fund at the start of the walk.
“I am very glad to have this event named after my father,” he said.
Kinney Drugs Foundation has been a major contributor in the past 47 years ago.
To date, the Edwards I. Moses Walk/Run for Life has raised over $2 million, which has been distributed to local charities.
The cancer fund keeps every dollar raised in St. Lawrence County, helping with prevention, early detection and diagnosis of cancer for local residents.
The fund has recently supported Gouverneur Hospital, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Massena Memorial Hospital, Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Community Center of the North Country Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, Help Sami Kick Cancer Jerry’s Run for Cancer, and Compassionate Care Foundation.
