ROSSIE – State police are investigating a fatal structure fire that occurred early Feb. 8 on County Route 3.
At approximately 2:30 a.m., troopers responded to reports of a fully engulfed residence, officers said. Local fire departments arrived on the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze before entering the structure, where they discovered a deceased individual inside.
New York State fire investigators and the St. Lawrence County coroner were reportedly present at the scene. The coroner ordered the removal of the deceased, and an autopsy is scheduled for Feb. 11 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Forensic Pathologist Dr. Scott LaPoint will conduct the examination to determine the individual’s identity and establish the cause and manner of death.
The investigation remains ongoing.
State police were assisted at the scene by personnel from New York State Fire, as well as fire departments from Oxbow, Brier Hill, Hammond, and Gouverneur Fire and Rescue.
