Posted

CANTON -- Thomas (Tom) Dalton, 91, passed away at Wynn Hospital, Utica, NY on June 10, 2025.

He was the son of Mark L. and Winifred R. Dalton of Oneida, NY.

He graduated from St. Patrick’s School and Oneida High School where he was a letterman in both basketball and football.

Thomas received a Civil Engineering degree from Clarkson College, Potsdam and did further studies in engineering at Cornell, Ithaca.

He served the country in the Air Force Reserves.

He began his career as an engineer for both the Linde Company, a division of Union Carbide and General Electric in Detroit, MI.

While working at Linde he oversaw sites in Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland and New York. This varied background led him to become a Professor of Engineering Technology at SUNY Canton.

Tom embraced teaching with great enthusiasm.

Surveying brought him to the outdoors where he was most comfortable.

He retired after thirty-three years.

While handling a full teaching schedule, he also worked as a consulting engineer at Alcoa, Massena, NY.

Tom was appointed for two terms as a P.E. at the State of New York Syracuse/Watertown Uniform Board of Review.

As a member of the Parish Council at St. Mary’s Church in Canton, NY he used his skills to plot the new addition to the church cemetery.

His two hobbies in life were: trout fishing in the Adirondacks, Quebec, Canada and the Four Corners in the SW.

While working on fishing poles in the basement you would often hear the strains of Willy Nelson on his CD player.

His 90-acre woodlot in Russel, NY brought the family cords of wood in winter and a chance to ride his ancient tractor and inspect the myriad of beaver dams.

With his wife, Joan, he traveled to all contiguous states, ultimately settling six months each year for twenty years in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

His family was his center and anchor in his life.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, of 63 years of marriage; a son, Mark Dalton of Fairplay, CO; a daughter, Julie Dalton and her husband, Steve Milone of Loudonville, NY; a daughter, Jennifer Cavanagh of Manlius, NY, widow of Mark Cavanagh of Oneida, NY; a sister, Mary Anne Tuohey of Auburndale, MA and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Cecilia Natter of San Antonio, TX.

Tom was a cherished husband, loving father, good and faithful friend, honored teacher, and precise engineer.

He loved America.

He always said he was blessed by coming of age after WWII.

Funeral services will be held 11AM, Wednesday, June 18, 2025, from St. Joseph’s Church, where his funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverend Christopher Ballard, pastor.

Friends may call at the Church from 10:15AM-11AM, prior to the funeral Mass.

Interment will be made at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Contributions, in memory of Tom, may be made to the Clarkson Fund, Clarkson University, Box 5522, 8 Clarkson Avenue, Potsdam, New York.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main Street, Oneida.
