Sylvia A. Broer, 89, Massena

MASSENA- Sylvia A. Broer, 89, of 22 N. Allen Street, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 6, 2025 at the North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Sylvia was born on January 30, 1936 in Massena, daughter of the late Merrill and Kathleen (LaRue) Badger. She was a 1952 Massena Central School graduate and earned her BA in Education from SUNY Potsdam in 1956. She married William T.F. Broer II in 1957 at St. John’s Episcopal Church. After 21 years of marriage, they divorced in 1978.

She was a faithful communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she was a Deacon, a member of the vestry, a liturgy reader, a long-time member of the Alter Guild, and sang in the choir.

Sylvia began her career as a K-12 teacher before starting a family. Later she worked as a substitute teacher, a substitute mailman, and taught at the Massena School of Business. She worked for several years as a bookkeeper for Bob Post Insurance, as a Field Executive for the Girl Scouts of Northern New York, and was a bookkeeper for Frenchie’s Chevrolet. Sylvia retired as a sales associate from JC Penney.

Sylvia enjoyed researching genealogy, gardening, visiting museums and traveling. She liked listening to 50’s music, and attended concerts at SUNY Potsdam and in Ogdensburg. She loved watching and feeding the birds, and just being in the outdoors. She enjoyed working on crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and when she was younger, camping and hiking.

She is survived by her four children, Mark Broer of Massena; Carole Broer of Pike, NH; David Broer of Ardmore, OK; Andrew Broer, his wife Ti, and three grandchildren of San Jose, CA; a cousin, John Badger and his wife Dorothy of Massena; a sister-in-law, Lois Badger, of Texas and two nieces and a nephew. Besides her parents, Merrill and Kathleen, she was predeceased by her brother Grant Badger.

There will be no public calling hours, a full eucharist service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal church on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at 11:00 am.

Donations may be made in Sylvia’s memory to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Massena, NY.
