CANTON — In celebration of County Government Month, St. Lawrence County Community Services received support for its food pantry, including a donation of five full carts of shelf-stable food from the Canton Price Chopper and a $500 contribution from Edward C. Seymour VFW Post #1231.
"These contributions highlight a strong spirit of community and a shared commitment to supporting those in need, particularly individuals facing behavioral health challenges who are ineligible for food stamps or have exhausted their benefits before the end of the month." the department said in a release.
The pantry, which has grown to become a vital lifeline, began modestly when nurses at the agency brought in food for patients who came to appointments hungry. Staff members soon began contributing from their own pockets, and eventually, the organization sought and secured grant funding to formalize the effort. That funding is now nearing its end, making community support critical.
“We appreciate the generosity of Price Chopper and the Canton VFW in helping to combat food insecurity, especially during County Government Month,” the department said in a release. “Together, we can ensure that the individuals we serve have access to the nutrition they need to thrive.”
