High winds cause over 1,500 power outages, school districts cancel after school activities

More than 1,500 St. Lawrence County homes were without power as a result of high winds Monday afternoon, according to National Grid. 

Weather conditions also led more than a dozen county school districts to cancel after school activities.

Multiple power outages in the city of Ogdensburg left over 1,400 customers without power beginning around 1:45 p.m. Monday. Power was restored to Ogdensburg at roughly 3 p.m.

The following St. Lawrence County school districts have cancelled after school activities, including high school sports, due to high winds and chilly weather conditions.

They include as of 3:15 p.m. today, Jan. 27:

Brasher Falls, Canton, Clifton-Fine, Edwards-Knox, Gouverneur, Hermon-DeKalb, Heuvelton, Lisbon, Madrid-Waddington, Massena, Morristown, Norwood-Norfolk, Ogdensburg, Parishville-Hopkinton, and Potsdam Central Schools.

Large portions of South Colton and Stark were in the dark until about 2:15 p.m., with 149 customers affected.

A smattering of smaller outages were reported in Lisbon, Raymondville, Madrid, Canton, Pierrepont, and Russell, which persisted through Monday afternoon. 

Communities in the northernmost part of the county including Massena, Brasher, and Louisville did not experience power outages as a result of Monday’s winds. 

A wind advisory remains in effect in St. Lawrence County until 1 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, according to the NOAA weather station in Parishville.
