POTSDAM — The Potsdam Fire Department responded to a reported fire in the rear cargo area of a Casella garbage truck Friday, Oct. 10, at 12:08 p.m. in the parking lot of the Kinney Drugs shopping center at 200 Market St., according to a press release on the department’s website.
Engine 49 arrived to find the truck had already unloaded its cargo into the parking lot. The pile of recycling material was reportedly actively burning, and firefighters stretched a 1 3/4-inch handline to knock down most of the flames.
Casella employees used a skid steer to spread out and fully extinguish the material before it was loaded into a dumpster and hauled away, officials said.
No injuries were reported, and Potsdam Fire returned to service at 2:16 p.m.
