POTSDAM -  What started as a passion for music has turned into a decade-long legacy in Potsdam, as Brick & Mortar Music celebrates 10 years of supporting local musicians and schools.

Brick & Mortar Music recently marked their tenth business anniversary.  David Thurlow, Village of Potsdam economic developer, recently presented a proclamation signed by Mayor Alexandra Jacobs Wilke to Jeremy and Allison Carney, to celebrate the milestone.

Jeremy and Allison Carney have been lifelong music enthusiasts, who began careers in the music industry, for Jeremy in 1997 and Allison in 2001, at a time when school music programs were flourishing and new technologies and products were being introduced.

“Jeremy and Allison have made extensive contributions supporting the arts, education and small business over the past decade,” said Melanie Flack, executive director of the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce. “They have formed a strong relationship with the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, speaking in classes for the music business and music education programs, supplying books and accessories for courses, offering invaluable internships, and sponsoring performances on campus and in the community.”

In 2015, Brick & Mortar Music opened its doors at 15 Market St. offering a place where beginners, hobbyists and professionals alike could seek musical products with the help of staff.

Their business filled a void left by the closing of the long-time downtown Potsdam business Northern Music & Video, where they had previously been employed.

Today Brick & Mortar Music serves more than 40 school districts and over 100 teachers within a 100-mile radius across Northern New York, offering school supplies, books, instruments and accessories to meet the needs of each program, as well as an instrumental rental program that provides access to band and orchestra instruments.

They donate countless hours of technical support and volunteer work to bring in 40 musical acts in three days during the annual Potsdam Summer Festival, attracting hundreds of visitors to the community each year,” Flack said. .
