POTSDAM -- The Village of Potsdam will launch the First Annual Potsdam Paddle Boat Race on Saturday, May 31 at 10 a.m. at Ives Park.
This all-ages event will feature a 1.25-mile race along the Raquette River, and will officially open the newly installed boat house at Ives Park.
The boathouse, a repurposed storage building that was already in the village’s possession, is located along the tree line near the farmer’s market pavilion and all night parking lot.
The park currently has a kayak and canoe launch into the Raquette River which the village installs in warmer months, and local paddlers have made the park a favored launch point into the river.
Organizers hope the paddle brings the community together for "a fun and active day on the water," a press release from the village said.
“This event is a great way to celebrate the start of summer and highlight our beautiful riverfront,” said Village Trustee Sharon Williams, who is helping to organize the event. “We’re looking forward to welcoming residents and visitors for a morning of outdoor fun.”
Participants are welcome to compete in kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, or other non-motorized boats.
Whether you're racing to win or just looking to enjoy the scenic river route, this event promises an exciting experience for beginners and experienced paddlers alike, said village officials.
Kayaks and paddle boards will be available to rent at the new boathouse in Ives Park, based on availability. Early arrival is encouraged to secure rental equipment.
"It should be a great time and then after that, boat rentals are very affordable and help people really come down and make use of the boathouse and spend money and support our downtown," Williams said during a recent village board meeting speaking about the race.
