Ogdensburg tax bills have error, but amount due is correct

Posted

OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg officials say that while the levy on tax bills that went out recently is incorrect, the tax rate and amount due are accurate.

In a press release issued Dec. 31,  the City of Ogdensburg said that a

discrepancy has been identified in the total city levy amount printed on the 2025

city-county tax bills. Tax bills were mailed before the error was discovered.

The total levy amount listed on the bill is incorrect, but the amounts billed to individual taxpayers are accurate and no further action is required by property owners.

The miscalculation affects only the summary amount for the overall city levy and does not impact the calculation of taxes owed by any property owner.

“We want to reassure all taxpayers that the individual amounts owed on their tax bills are correct,” said City Manager Fonda Chronis. “This issue is limited to the total levy figure as it appears on the tax bill summary, and it does not affect individual payments or the city’s ability to collect the revenue necessary to support its operations. The city will work with appropriate parties to ensure this error is corrected in the future.”

Adds Chronis, “While I wish the tax bill accurately reflected the 2% levy reduction approved by Council, this error is immaterial to the amount due on the bill. That number is correct.”

The City of Ogdensburg apologizes for any confusion this may have caused and thanks residents for their understanding as we address this matter. Taxpayers with questions about their bills are encouraged to contact the City Comptroller’s Office during regular business hours.

An example of the error is included above.

The city “Total tax Levy” amount is incorrect (should be $5,599,057 - but is listed as $5,716,220). The tax rate, however, is correct ($15.6945) and is the number used to calculate the amount of tax due (taxable value of parcel x tax rate / 1,000).

Since the tax rate is correct, the amount due is correct.
