CANTON – An Ogdensburg man was remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility after allegedly brandishing a long gun in the St. Lawrence County Courthouse parking lot on Thursday morning.
Elliot D. Roberts, 21, was charged with one count of criminal possession of a weapon in a sensitive location, a Class E felony. He was arraigned in Canton Town Court and remanded to the county jail on $10,000 cash bail and $15,000 bond.
The Canton Police Department received notification at 9:10 a.m. that an individual was observed in the courthouse parking lot, 48 Court Street, with a gun. A witness confirmed that a male subject had a long gun outside of his vehicle in the lot, and that at one point he had leaned it up against the side of his vehicle. When questioned by responding officers about the weapon on the county property, Roberts denied the claim, reported police.
Roberts was found to have an outstanding bench warrant out of the Village of Gouverneur, which led to his being taken into custody and transported to the Canton Police Department.
A search warrant of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a .22 caliber rifle, an imitation pistol (cap gun) and various types of ammunition.
Canton police were assisted by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office and NYS Court Security.
