CANTON – Military Times magazine has identified SUNY Canton as one of the best schools in the state for former service members, according to the publication's 2024 "Best for Vets" college rankings.
The college placed 14th in New York and 23rd overall in the Northeast. Rankings are based on survey results from participating colleges and universities, along with public data from the U.S. Department of Education and Department of Veterans Affairs.
In addition to providing priority class registration for military-connected students, the college has a dedicated staff member who provides personalized guidance on how to navigate and utilize tuition assistance benefits, including new state legislation that has expanded the Veterans Tuition Award.
"This expansion will entitle former military members who served for at least four years and reside in the state to be eligible for the program, regardless of whether they served in combat," said SUNY Canton Director of Military Connected Benefits and Recruitment Patrick S. Massaro. "I encourage all veterans who may be eligible for this benefit to contact my office to learn more."
SUNY has also recently announced the appointment of Susan Dewan as its first assistant director of enrollment for military and veteran recruitment. This new role is part of SUNY's commitment to develop strategy focused on recruiting, enrolling and supporting military-affiliated students. She and her staff will serve as the point of contact for SUNY's campus admissions officers.
"I look forward to collaborating with Susan Dewan and her staff as they work to help more New Yorkers transition from the military to their career pursuits," Massaro said.
SUNY Canton currently serves 126 military-affiliated students and has been recognized as a Best for Vets college since 2015. The college has earned a host of other accolades for its military friendliness from U.S. News & World Report and G.I. Jobs Magazine.
