Memorial ceremonies planned throughout St. Lawrence County

Around the county communities plan to honor U.S. veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Local events will coincide with thousands across the nation in recognition of the national holiday that honors veterans who have died.

Potsdam

 The village of Potsdam will be helping out the Amvets Post 282 this year with the community's annual Memorial Day parade and celebration.

The village is inviting groups to line up at Potsdam High School's Leroy Street parking lot starting at 8:30 a.m. Those expected to participate include the Potsdam school marching band.

The parade will follow the usual route, departing at 9:30 a.m., and proceed down Garden Street and then Market Street.

There will be a ceremony in Ives Park to honor the nation's fallen veterans and first responders.

Individuals and organizations who wish to take part in the parade by marching or taking a patriotic float should contact Administrator Isabelle Gates-Shult for more information, at igates-shult@vi.potsdam.ny.us.

Canton

In Canton,  Edward C. Seymour Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1231 in Canton will hold a wreath ceremony on the Main Street Bridge at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. in the Village Park.

The park ceremony will include singing by the Goldenaires barbershop group.

The public is welcome to attend both ceremonies.

In Massena

MASSENA -- The Massena American Legion will host a Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 26.

The event will begin at 11 a.m., with the parade beginning at Sacred Heart Church, proceeding up Main Street to West Orvis Street and ending at Veteran Memorial Park on Andrews Street.

A ceremony with a wreath laying is slated to be held in the park following the parade.

Norwood

Norwood American Legion, 10 Maple St. will organize a Memorial Day Parade Monday, May 26, at 11 a.m. through downtown Norwood. 

Ogdensburg

The Ogdensburg Veterans Association will hold a Memorial Day ceremony Monday at the Vietnam Moving Wall Memorial Monument at 10 a.m.

Lay Chaplain Larry Caufield will hold a prayer service and read aloud the names of all St. Lawrence County Armed Forces veterans who died in that war.

The service will last roughly 25 minutes.

The entire community is invited and encouraged to come out and show support for all men and women who have served and are still serving and to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

A gathering will be held at 11 a.m. in the Veteran's Plot in the Ogdensburg Cemetery, which will be led by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War 2936 in Ogdensburg. 

Hammond

Hammond Fire and Rescue is pleased to announce our annual Memorial Day Chicken Barbecue will be held on Monday, May 26th from 12;00 noon to 2:00 PM. at the fire station at 300 Lake Street in Hammond.

Dinners include 1/2 chicken, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, and a roll, $15.00. 1/4 chicken dinner meal is $10.

Hammond Fire and Rescue, Inc., is a not for profit organization that provides fire protection and ambulance service to the Village and Town of Hammond.

Hermon

Hermon will honor its veterans and fallen heroes with a Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Community members participating in the parade are asked to line up at 10 a.m. at the Hermon Post Office, where the parade will start before proceeding to the cemetery.

A ceremony to commemorate those who served will be held at the cemetery following the parade. After the ceremony, all are invited to a potluck lunch at the Hermon Firehall.

Organizers are encouraging anyone who would like to participate in the parade or contribute a dish to the potluck to call 315-347-2285 for more information.

Heuvelton

HEUVELTON — AMVETS Post 1997, 107 State St., will hold a Memorial Day Observance Sunday, May 25, at Hillcrest Cemetery, Rensselaer Street, Heuvelton at 1 p.m.; Pine Hill Observance,  Pine Hill Cemetery, Eel Weir Road, Town of Oswegatchie at 2 p.m.

A luncheon will be held after the Memorial Day observances at  AMVETS Post 1997 at 3 p.m.
