CANTON — SUNY Canton will host the Mathematical Association of America's (MAA) American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 10 and 12 at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Wicks Hall, rooms 006 and 008.

More than 30 area high school students have signed up for the challenge.

The competition invites students to apply their mathematical skills in a real-world problem-solving environment that is both challenging and supportive.

Participants will engage in analytical thinking skills that are valuable for their academic and career aspirations.

Math teams from Canton's Hugh C. Williams Senior High School and Lisbon High School have signed up to compete in the event.

The AMC 10 and AMC 12 exams are 25-question, 75-minute, multiple-choice tests for students in grades 12 and below, respectively.

These tests, designed by the MAA, cover a range of high school mathematics topics, including:

  • Trigonometry
  • Advanced algebra
  • Advanced Geometry

Tests are accessible to students who do not yet have a background in calculus or higher mathematics, and the competition fosters a deeper understanding of mathematics through complex and engaging questions, serving as the initial step in a series of math contests that can lead to representing the U.S. in the International Math Olympiad.

SUNY Canton will also host the AMC 8 for middle school students at noon on Friday, Jan. 24, in Wicks Hall, room 008. It will mark the fourth year SUNY Canton has offered the test.

The AMC 8 exam is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice test for students in grades 8 and below, respectively. These tests, designed by the MAA, cover a range of middle school mathematics topics, including:

  • Counting and probability
  • Estimation
  • Proportional reasoning
  • Elementary geometry (including the Pythagorean Theorem)
  • Spatial visualization
  • Interpreting graphs and tables

Some of the later questions may touch on beginning algebra topics, such as linear or quadratic functions and coordinate geometry.

Registration is currently open for the AMC8 competition in January. School districts, Parents and guardians are encouraged to register their students through the MAA student portal prior to the event.

In preparation for the AMC 8 competition, SUNY Canton Professor Jiayuan Lin offers free review materials. Professor Lin, part of the college's Canino School of Engineering Technology, can be reached at linj@canton.edu for additional resources.

Both competitions are among the community-centered initiatives offered through the Center for Workforce, Community, and Industry Partnerships.
