Students will learn about STEM, director says

MASSENA -- Sign-ups are now open for the Massena Central School Summer Raider Academy.

The program, which served over 240 students last year, is open to elementary students currently enrolled in grades K-6.

The Academy is free for all students, with transportation available in many cases.

Running four weeks, students will take part from July 7 through July 30, focusing on reading, writing, math and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) studies.

Classes will be held from 8:30-11:45 a.m., Monday through Thursday each week.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided for each student at no cost, with transportation available to students who are outside of walking distance or do not have transportation from a parent or guardian.

Classes will be held at Nightingale Elementary School.

A field trip will be held at the end of the program, according to Danielle J. Chapman, the district’s director of educational support services.

Chapman recently told Board of Education members that 66% of students in the program required transportation last year.

She said it was her hope to prepare students to master "priority content" over the four weeks the program is offered.

“So, we want to make sure that the students have what they need when they’re going up to the next grade level. Our instructional focus is always reading, writing, math and STEM," she said.

As part of the activities, students will also visit Clarkson University to experience STEM programs first hand, Chapman said.

Projects will also be a central focus of the program, with teachers of students in grades three through six also creating STEM lesson plans.

For questions, contact Bailey Marolf at 315-764-3700, ext. 3145, email bmarolf@mcs.k12.ny.us, or Chapman at dchapman@mcs.k12.ny.us.

Parents or guardians who enroll students will receive an email response and confirmation letter by June 20 with additional information.
