MASSENA -- James S. Cross, age 96, peacefully passed away Sunday morning May 4, 2025, at St. Joseph's Home in Ogdensburg N.Y.

James was born on October 21, 1928, on Croil Island, Louisville N.Y., son of the late Thorold and Greta Hollister Cross.

He attended Louisville and Massena schools and in 1945 he joined the Merchant Marine and sailed with the Federal Motorship Company out of New York.

From 1946 to 1951 he worked for Foster and Rowell Plumbing and Heating. From 1951 to 1958 he was employed by as a maintenance man in Alcoa's River Department. In 1958 he was hired by the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation and was an engineer in the Marine Section when he retired in 1989.

In 1948 he married Thelma M. MacLennan at Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Jerecki officiating. Thelma predeceased him on November 2, 2007.

James is survived by his son, David James Cross and wife, Kathleen of Pittsford N.Y., his daughter, Jane Cross Gabri and husband, Robert of Massena N.Y., a grandson, Bryan James Cross and wife, Danielle of Webster N.Y. and a granddaughter, Mary-Claire Gabri Rico and husband, Braxton of Beulaville N.C. He is also survived by two great grandsons, Nolan James Cross and Myles Andrew Cross.

James was predeceased by his brothers, George, Thorold, Orval and Ray and his sisters, Bernice Fox and Hilda Daly.

There will be no public calling hours.

A private service will be held at Phillips Memorial Home in Massena with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Massena at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to St. Joseph's Home, 950 Linden St., Ogdensburg N.Y. 13669
