St Lawrence County Legislator Gennet has proposed that more of the electricity generated here should stay here. I agree.
While he focused on the Robert Moses power dam, I think we can include all the power generated from all sources. Be it from wind, solar or hydro we benefit by replacing imported energy with locally produced energy.
We are fortunate to have an abundance of renewable electricity generated right here. Fortunately not only because it’s clean energy, but because it is some of lowest cost energy available. We have the resources to generate all our own energy. We should clearly use it.
There was a time when all energy used in the North Country was provided via local sources. It’s time to do that again.
Electrification of all aspects of our economy allows us to provide for all our own energy needs. Converting our cooking, home and water heating, transportation all to electric means we use energy made right here. And we improve our energy efficiency at the same time.
No longer is sending money out of the county to procure energy required. Make it locally. Use it locally. Save ourselves a bundle in the process. No government policies or actions are required to accomplish this. We just have to do it. The sooner the better.
