A heat advisory is in effect from noon today through 8 p.m. on Thursday with heat index values over 100 degrees expected in St. Lawrence County, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Forecasters predict heat index values of 95 to 105 over the next two days in parts of the North Country. A shower or thunderstorm late morning is possible. Winds will be 6-9 mph.

Overnight temps will not be cool, with lows in the mid 70s, the service says.

Temps Wednesday and Thursday will push 100 as well, with Thursday likely being slightly cooler, NWS says.

Extreme heat may cause illness in some people.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety andHealth Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke

is an emergency! Call 911.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Indoor temperatures may continue to rise after peak heating hours in poorly ventilated spaces. Those without air conditioning should consider the potential for lingering health impacts while indoors late in the day.
