MASSENA — Those looking for summer fun at no charge can find a variety of family fun at the Hawkins Point Visitor Center in Massena.
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has officially opened the Frank S. McCullough, Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center for the summer season and will welcome guests daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering a wide array of interactive exhibits, educational programming, and special events through the summer months.
Starting Tuesday, July 1, the popular “Beat the Heat” summer movie series will return to Hawkins Point, with family-friendly films shown every Tuesday throughout the season.
Educational programming will also be front and center this summer. On Wednesdays beginning July 2, the center will host weekly STEM activities designed to engage young minds with hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math experiences.
In addition, every Thursday in July and August, visitors will have the opportunity to interact with the center’s brand-new 3-D printer. Guests can experiment with 3-D printing technology and even take home their own creations.
The summer lineup also includes live animal shows presented by naturalist Zowie Auger. Her interactive program, Her-Petology, offers an up-close look at reptiles and amphibians while highlighting their importance to the environment. Shows will be held at 11:30 a.m. on July 10, July 24, August 7, and August 21.
Located at the St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project, the Hawkins Point Visitors Center features a variety of hands-on exhibits exploring electricity, renewable energy, environmental stewardship, and regional history. Guests can generate electricity on a bicycle, create static charges with a Van de Graaff generator, and explore an interactive terrain map of the St. Lawrence River.
Additional highlights include a wood-carved map chronicling Jacques Cartier’s exploration of the river, panoramic views of the power dam, and a community room available for public use.
