HEUVELTON -- Gordon H. Dickinson, 89, Heuvelton passed away on Wednesday, July 31 at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home, Ogdensburg.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 5th at 11:00 am at the United Presbyterian Church in Heuvelton with Rev. Rob Schirmer officiating.
Burial will follow the service at Hillcrest Cemetery with military honors.
Gordon Hershal Dickinson was born November 4, 1934, the oldest son of Gearld and Lena (Denno) Dickinson.
He graduated from Lisbon School in 1951.
In 1954 he entered the United States Marine Corps proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict.
While home on leave, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Arlene Dawley October 18th, 1955. They would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this year.
Following his military service, Gordon worked for the E.D. Briggs Food Distribution Company in Ogdensburg.
In 1965, the family moved to DePeyster where they owned and operated a dairy farm for 12 years before moving to their current home on the Irish Settlement Road.
He then went to work for the postal service as a rural mail carrier out of the Ogdensburg post office and later transferred to Lisbon retiring in 1996.
Gordon had several hobbies. For many years after his retirement, he and Mary could be seen on their morning walks into town. He was an avid reader, loved music, crossword puzzles, and painting. He also enjoyed golfing, especially with his grandsons.
Gordon was also a model railroader. Half of the basement in their home was his railroad yard complete with mountains, trees, streams and rural settings he crafted by hand.
His favorite season was baseball season. He and Mary spent many evenings watching the NY Yankees, and on occasion were known to be armchair managers and umpires.
Gordon considered his family his greatest gift and one that brought him the most joy. Time spent together was always filled with much love and plenty of laughter. His strong faith and love of his family was evident to all who knew him.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; 3 daughters, Janice (David) Johnson of Heuvelton, Donna (Bill) Donahue of Dannemora and Sheila (Larry) Mehaffy of Lisbon; brother, Rev Allan Dickinson, Utica, sister-in-law, Beth Ann Dickinson, Newfane; 5 grandchildren, Wayne Parrow, Joanne Beaudry, Edwin Tracy, Jessie Hensley and Eric Mehaffy, 6 great-grandchildren, Logan and Leah Parrow, Owen and Chloe Beaudry and Hazel and Blaire Tracy.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gearld and Lena Dickinson; a brother, David Dickinson and son-in-law, Bruce Parrow.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Heuvelton United Presbyterian Church, Heuvelton First Responders or the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad.
