Gilbert D. "Butch" Mere, 80, formerly of Massena

MASSENA – Gilbert D. “Butch” Mere, 80, formerly of Massena and most recently residing in California and Parishville, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital after a brief illness.

Butch was born in Massena on December 1, 1944, the son of the late Alexander and Mary (Hunter) Mere. He attended and graduated from Massena Central Schools. On July 29, 1965, he entered the US Navy, proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge on July 8, 1969. A marriage to Diane Shorette blessed him with 2 sons before their marriage ended. On December 6, 1981, he married Carol Pidgeon; she predeceased him on December 24, 2019.

Butch worked in the potrooms at Alcoa, where he retired as a welder after 33 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Butch is survived by his children, Kevin and Renee Mere of North Carolina, Cory Mere of Massena, Tammie and Willy Perez of Fontana, California, and Scott and Chantelle Mere of Parishville; his grandchildren, Breanna, Connor, Mason, Garrett, Lily, Gavin, Kendal, and Charlotte; two step grandchildren, Charissa Lamb and her husband, Ryan and Justin Plourde; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Vickie Mere; a grandson, Gauge Mere; and two brothers, Alexander “Joe” Mere, Jr. and Lawrence “Buster” Mere.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, however there will be no services at this time. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Parishville Fire Department or the Parishville AMVETS.
