He was 93 years old.

Hunter joined the college's staff in 1959 as an assistant professor of physical education in 1959. He served as the men's basketball coach from 1959-62.

Hunter led the transition of the men's lacrosse program from club to varsity status in 1977 and was the SUNYAC Coach of the Year in 1984.

Besides coaching and teaching, Hunter was also the first director of Potsdam's Star Lake Campus. In 1967, he co-founded the New York State Outdoor Education Association and was its second president.

Hunter served as Potsdam's Director of Community Relations from 1971 through 1980, when he became manager of Maxcy Hall.

Named Chairman of Health, Physical Education and Athletics in 1985, Hunter held the position until his retirement in 1990. As chairman, he was a founding committee member of the Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted in 2004.

After earning both his bachelor's and master's from SUNY Cortland, Hunter received his doctorate from Springfield College in 1971.
