COLTON — Colton-Pierrepont Central School is raising funds to add a gaga ball pit to its playground.

A collection trailer for redeemable cans and bottles has been set up along Route 56, across from the Colton Post Office, to support the effort. The drive will continue for one more week.

Gaga ball, a fast-paced playground game played in an enclosed pit, combines elements of dodgeball and tag. The game has grown in popularity among children across the North Country.

The idea for the new pit came from a group of students looking for fun, inclusive ways to enhance the playground, according to school principal Jennifer McKinley. School leaders and parent volunteers, including the parent group Colts in Action, are working with students to bring the project to life.

“All students, from elementary through high school, will be welcome to play,” said McKinley. “Games can be adapted for different age groups to ensure everyone can participate safely..”

The pit will be installed in an open, safe area next to the current playground. McKinley said she hopes to have it ready for use before winter, or early next spring at the latest.

The fundraising goal is approximately $2,000 to cover the cost of the pit, installation, and safety surfacing. Residents can also contribute through direct financial donations, which can be dropped off at the school or mailed.
