POTSDAM — Clarkson is ranked fourth and St. Lawrence University ranks seventh in the ECAC men’s hockey preseason poll.
ECAC Hockey has announced the results of the 2024-25 Men’s Hockey Preseason Coaches' Poll and All-League Team selections. In the highly anticipated preseason poll, league coaches have predicted Cornell to lead the conference this season, receiving 10 of 12 first-place votes.
Cornell secured the top spot in the preseason rankings (120 pts) after finishing second last season with a strong conference record of 12-6-4 before winning the Whitelaw Trophy in Lake Placid. Close behind is last season’s Cleary Cup champion Quinnipiac (17-4-1), voted into second place with 111 points. Dartmouth is slotted third with 93 points followed by Clarkson in fourth place with 82 points. Rounding out the top five with 75 points is Colgate.

The ECAC Hockey coaches have selected the 2024-2025 Men’s Hockey Preseason All-League team, highlighting the projected top talent in the season to come. Starting up front and coming off a remarkable rookie season is 2024 ECAC Hockey All-Rookie team member Mason Marcellus. Quinnipiac forward Marcellus led all first-year players with 0.92 points per game and earned SportsCenter Top 10 honors; placing 6th with his goal off the boards against New Hampshire in October.
Joining Marcellus is Cornell forward Dalton Bancroft, who earned ECAC Hockey Third Team honors after recording 31 points in 34 games, with seven of his 12 goals being power-play markers—the second most by an ECAC Hockey player. Rounding out the offensive trio is Forward Luke Haymes, a dynamic forward who earned First Team All-ECAC Hockey honors and led Dartmouth in goals (18) last season.
Anchoring the blue line are Union’s John Prokop and Cornell’s Ben Robertson. Prokop, an AHCA All-America East Second Team selection last season, ranked among the top 10 in ECAC Hockey for assists (T-3rd), assists per game (3rd), points (7th), and points per game (5th). Meanwhile, Robertson made an impressive impact in his debut season by tying Cornell’s record for most points by a freshman defenseman since 1984-85 with 23 points, earning the title of the program’s most promising freshman, and landing on the watch list for the Tim Taylor Award, college hockey’s top freshman player.
Returning as a unanimous selection on the ECAC Preseason All-League roster is Cornell goaltender Ian Shane. Named ECAC Hockey's Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year, Shane had a remarkable 23-24 season leading the nation with his 1.69 goals-against average and registered multiple shutouts for the Big Red against Minnesota Duluth (10/28), Harvard (1/26), and Brown (2/16).
