CANTON— A Chinese national who allegedly attempted to steal over $50,000 by pretending to be a U.S. Marshal was arrested in Canton Tuesday.
Liqing Chi, 29, of Flushing, was charged May 21 with one count second-degree attempted grand larceny, (D felony), according to a statement released Thursday by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
Chi was charged following investigation of a fraud case, which revealed that he allegedly came to St. Lawrence County to receive a large sum of money from a victim through deception, having reportedly claimed to be a U.S. Marshal.
Chi was arraigned in Canton Town Court before Justice Foster and was released on his own recognizance.
A Chinese national, Chi was later apprehended by Massena-based Homeland Security enforcement for immigration violations.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force, Canton Police Department, Ogdensburg Police Department, New York State Police, the investigation unit of the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s office, United States Border Patrol, and Department of Homeland Security Investigations.
