Basil George Cruikshank, age 75, of Huntington Beach, CA, passed away peacefully at home on February 1, 2025, after a long battle with failing health, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 18, 1949, in Ogdensburg, NY, to the late Wendell and Mildred (Griffith) Cruikshank. He was predeceased by his older brother, Allen, and sisters-in-law, Linda and Karen.

On June 13, 1970, he married Karen Lee Woods at the First Presbyterian Church in Ogdensburg. Together, they had three children, Scott (Norma) of Cypress, CA, Todd (Yolanda) of Peekskill, NY, and Shawn (Carrie) of Huntington Beach, CA. Basil’s greatest joy came from his eight grandchildren, Brianna, Mateo, Juliana, Mya, Noah, Joshua, Hudson, and Lennon.

Basil is also survived by his siblings, Robert, Donald, and Barbara Cruikshank-Wilson, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Basil graduated from Lisbon Central School in 1967 and earned an Associate’s Degree in Construction Technology from SUNY Canton in 1969. He worked for Northeast Construction, Ogdensburg Building Supply, and NOCO Energy Corp. before retiring in 2003.

After retiring, he worked part-time at Bridge Port Veterinary Clinic in Ogdensburg, assisting with inventory, administration, and payroll. He often joked that his role involved “doing brain surgery on the dogs,” reflecting his playful and kind nature.

In 2011, Basil and Karen relocated to Huntington Beach, CA, to be closer to their family, especially their grandchildren. Throughout his life, Basil enjoyed boating on the St. Lawrence River, woodworking, and helping his children with home renovation projects.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no calling hours. His life will be celebrated later this year in Huntington Beach.

Basil will forever be remembered for his kindness, humor, and generous spirit. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him.
