WADDINGTON – Carol Backus, a talented oil painter, will be the featured artist at the Gallery at Lake Saint Lawrence Arts from December 5 through December 27.
The Gallery is located at 14 Main Street, Waddington.
The exhibit runs Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Carol grew up in Hannawa Falls and when she and her husband, Phil, married they decided on Waddington as their home where they raised four children and a number of fur babies. During those years she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, and candle-making until oil painting came into her life.
Then they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio for Phil’s work, but she sincerely missed Waddington. It was in Cincinnati that she took her first oil painting class in September, 2012. She was hooked, and kept continuing classes and artist workshops until their return to Waddington in 2019. Always a busy woman, she has managed to take a few classes in the area since then.
Nature is her favorite subject to paint. Playing around with the way light is falling in a scene is always a happy challenge for her. She says she strives to create an atmosphere within a painting that makes a person feel like they walked right into the scene. Plein air painting is a recent love of hers. She finds it challenging, but very fulfilling as an artist.
Carol exhibits very well-defined lines in her painting of local and various areas in the United States. She takes many photos of scenes she would like to paint and works from them. She has a shed in her backyard dedicated as her painting workshop and spends many hours there. She does custom paintings of any number of scenes or pet portraits.
Carol is a member artist at The Gallery in Waddington, the Frederic Remington Museum in Ogdensburg, the Thousand Islands Art Center in Clayton, the Massena Artists Assn. in Massena, and the Bryan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville, Vermont. Her work has been chosen for display in all of these galleries and she has won many prizes in them. Her work has also been displayed at juried exhibits at the Rowhouse Gallery and The Art Affaire in Milford, Ohio.
