MASSENA -- Luella D. Bellinger, 80, of 20 Grassmere Terrace, peacefully passed away early Friday morning, June 7, 2019, at her home.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena with her nephew, Michael Bresee, officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service starting at 5:00 p.m.
Luella was born April 1, 1939, in Gloversville, the daughter of Earl King and Elise May (McLain) Bellinger.
She grew up in Meco, later moving with the family to Norfolk and eventually residing in Massena.
She worked for the Ward family in Massena for many years and has remained close friends with the Ward children throughout their lives.
Luella also ran a private cleaning business for many years, servicing many families and businesses in the community.
Luella was an accomplished seamstress and cook.
She enjoyed large family gatherings and preparing meals for others to enjoy.
Even when she was not hosting the meal, Luella would often arrive early to “supervise” the food preparation and offer her advice.
The oldest of her siblings, she took on the role of “mother hen” to all of them as well as all of her nieces and nephews.
Although she did not have a formal college education, Luella was well-read and enjoyed art, literature, history and politics.
For a period of time Luella wrote a column for her building newsletter titled “My View from the Third Floor” where she shared her observations and old memories.
She also served on the Massena Housing Authority for eight years.
Luella was predeceased by her parents, and three sisters: Iris Newtown, Kathie Herne, and Clare Bresee.
She is survived by her sister, Muriel Bellinger of Norwood; her brother, Charlie Bellinger of Massena; and many nieces and nephews.
