POTSDAM -- Catherine M. Kelly, 92, formerly of Madrid, peacefully passed away on March 8, 2019 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Catherine was born on September 04, 1926 in Woodside, Queens, the daughter of the late Charles and Helen McEvoy. She attend parochial schools in Woodside and later trained at Fordham’s Hospital School of Nursing as well as St. John’s University. Catherine earned a B.S. Ed. From SUNY Oneonta and a Master of Education from St. Lawrence University.

She married Lauris F. Kelly on April 13, 1952 at St. Sebastian Church, NYC. They spent their first year of marriage in Germany and traveling Europe and then moved to Madrid, NY where they raised seven children in the Kelly family stone house.

Catherine worked as a school nurse teacher, surgical nursing supervisor at Baltimore City Hospital and was an instructor for the Red Cross. As a longtime volunteer with the Cancer Society, she organized and worked with adult screening clinics.

Catherine first joined the faculty at Canton College in 1970. Her particular skill was in the field of psychiatric nursing. In 1982 she took a three month leave of absence to collaborate with clinical staff at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center and psychiatric clinics in China and the Philippines.

In 1990 Catherine was selected as recipient of the prestigious Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and in 1992 was SUNY Canton’s nominee for the New York State Nurse of Distinction Award. In 2012 she was honored with an induction to the SUNY Canton Hall of Fame.

Catherine is survived by her seven children: Maureen V. Kelly of Potsdam, NY, Catherine Tenge of Germantown, WI, Dr. Christine Kelly-Kleese of Chapel Hill, NC, Lauris C. Kelly (Patsy) of Potsdam, NY, Brian M. Kelly of Bosque Farms, NM, Allen J. Kelly (Chris) of Madrid, NY, F. Howard Kelly (Betsy) of Mars, PA; as well as twelve grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and husband, Lauris F. Kelly, as well as a sister, Helen Schaefer and a brother, Charles McEvoy; son-in-law Tony Kleese.

There will be no public calling hours. Memorial Services are to be announced.
