The state police officer who shot at a car tire in Ft. Covington trying to prevent a suspect from fleeing has been suspended without pay.

“The investigation has revealed during the attempted stop, Trooper Shawn Windoloski, SP Malone, discharged his Division issued weapon into the left rear tire of the vehicle, attempting to disable the vehicle,” the press release from State Police Troop B Commander Major Darrin Pitkin’s office said.

Per division policy in such a case, an administrative investigation is being conducted by the State Police Professional Standards Bureau.

Trooper Windoloski, a three-year veteran with the state police, is suspended without pay, it was announced.

No criminal charges have been filed in the case, which is ongoing.

At about 8 p.m. Jan. 19, state police based in Malone stopped a car for speeding on State Route 37 in the town of Fort Covington.

“The driver failed to comply for the Trooper and a short pursuit ensued,” the original press release from troopers said.

The driver stopped the vehicle on Frye Road, and a male passenger ran from the vehicle, troopers said.

The driver drove from the scene again, “and the trooper discharged his division weapon into the left rear tire in an attempt disable the car.”

The second pursuit went for about four miles before the driver was taken into custody, while a search for the male passenger was conducted by troopers, their canine unit, and US Border Patrol.

The male passenger was located and when taken into custody, suffered minor injuries, according to the original state police report. “It is also determined he sustained a mild heart attack when running from the scene on Frye Road and was transported for medical treatment,” the announcement said.

A trooper on scene also suffered minor injuries when taking the subject into custody.
