POTSDAM -- Canton-Potsdam Hospital recently gained two new doctors who specialize in oncology and hematology.

Board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist Deepjot Singh, MD, has joined the medical staff of St. Lawrence Health System’s Canton-Potsdam Hospital (CPH). He is also the new medical director at the Center for Cancer Care, 50 Leroy St., where he is seeing patients.

Board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist Hanspreet Kaur, MD, has joined the medical staff of St. Lawrence Health System’s Canton-Potsdam Hospital (CPH). She is practicing at the Center for Cancer Care, 50 Leroy St.

“An important part of cancer care is the ability to receive it locally where family and friends are nearby for support. There have been a lot of advances in cancer care, and these treatments are offered right here,” Kaur said of CPH.

She pointed out annual checkups and early diagnosis are key, the announcement from St. Lawrence Health System said. She noted providers also have to connect with their patients. “To be an oncologist, you need to be a compassionate person, and I feel like I fill that need,” Kaur said. “Oncology has a lot of research going on, and I like that any recommendations I make can be evidence-based.”

“Dr. Kaur comes to the North Country with robust experience in inpatient and outpatient cancer care, with a specialization in breast cancer care,” said Oncology Director Benjamin Hull. “She has made meaningful contributions to breast cancer care research, and is an ardent advocate for community engagement and preventative healthcare.”

Kaur has given several scientific presentations and has written for peer-reviewed journals, review articles, book chapters, and abstracts. She is a junior member of Alpha Omega Alpha, a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and of the American Society of Hematology. Kaur has received numerous honors and awards.

As an oncologist and hematologist, Kaur specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of blood diseases and cancers such as iron-deficiency anemia, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, leukemia, and lymphoma.

Dr. Singh is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine for medical oncology, hematology, and for internal medicine. He earned his medical degree at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, India. He underwent his residency training at Akron General Medical Center, Akron, Ohio, and performed his fellowship in hematology/oncology at University Hospitals of Cleveland, and at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio.[img_assist|nid=262783|title=Dr. Singh|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=150|height=213]

As the medical director, Singh said he is looking forward to bringing the latest treatments to the Center for Cancer Care. His goal is to build a regionally recognized center of excellence in cancer care providing patient-centered care, said the announcement from St. Lawrence Health System.

“Oncology is both a fascinating and challenging field,” Singh said. “Almost everyone has been touched in some way by cancer, whether they are cancer survivors, or their family or a friend has cancer. Cancer patients are living longer with more effective treatment options, including chemotherapy, target therapy, and immune therapy,” he said. “We will focus on the patient and his or her needs to provide quality care in the outpatient setting.”

The announcement of his appointment said he believes a good relationship between a patient and the medical team is paramount. “It is so important to listen to patients – what they care about, and hearing what they want. At the Cancer Center we work together as a team,” Singh said.

“Dr. Singh has a deep personal and professional commitment to strengthening the oncology services through partnerships across medical specialties,” noted Director of Oncology Benjamin Hull. “As the medical director, Dr. Singh will be instrumental in leading advances in scope and quality of care being provided to our North Country community.”

Singh has given several national scientific presentations and has written for peer-reviewed journals, review articles, book chapters, and abstracts. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and was previously an active member of the medical staff with the Louis Stokes Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio.

As an oncologist and hematologist, Singh specializes in the diagnosis and management of blood disorders, such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, and bleeding or clotting disorders, and cancers of colon, lung, breast, prostate, bladder, head and neck, leukemia, and lymphoma.
