As forecasters say temperatures in St. Lawrence County will ratchet up daily until reaching the 80s on Tuesday, the National Weather Service is warning that some bodies of water will remain cold enough to pose a hypothermia risk.
"The warm air temperatures this weekend in the lower to mid 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the lower to mid 50s across Lake Champlain, and in the upper 50s to lower 60s in the regions [sic] smaller lakes and rivers," NWS said in a special weather statement for the North Country. The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!"
Meteorologists say today, Sunday, and tomorrow, Monday, will have temperatures in the low to mid-70s with sunny skies. Each night will be clear, with Sunday dropping to the mid-40s and Monday to the low-50s, NWS said.
Tuesday will bring high temperatures in the low 80s with sunny skies, forecasters said. Night temperatures will drop to the low-60s followed by a Wednesday with a 50 percent chance of showers and temperatures in the mid-70s, NWS said.
