POTSDAM -- The Potsdam beaches are opening and the annual summer recreation program is set to go, but it will start later this year than it usually would.
Potsdam Town Councilor Sarah Lister, a member of the joint town and village recreation committee, reported to the town board at its June 11 meeting that the start of the summer's activities for children will be delayed because local schools' testing schedules finish this year later than usual, and the Fourth of July follows on immediately, so the program will start after the holiday.
The town beach at Postwood Park in Hannawa Falls is open now, but attempts to string ropes at the beach at Sandstoner Park were unsuccessful because the current is too strong so far, and the opening will have to wait.
The Recreation Department received "plenty of applications" for summer jobs with the program, Lister said.
The joint committee is looking into whether or not the recreation program fits the state definition of a day camp. She said they are checking into it, and if it does, Lister said, stricter rules might apply.
Promotional materials with this year's program details will be available soon, she said.
