Sen. Joseph Griffo, R- Rome, and Assemblyman Billy Jones, D-Plattsburgh, introduced legislation that repeals the state's prohibition on hair styling on Sunday.
The bill’s introduction comes as barbers, hair stylists and salons are preparing to resume operation in Phase 2 of the New York State’s reopening plan during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a joint news release from the North Country representatives.
The state’s current prohibition, while loosely and rarely enforced, disallows “any person who carries on or engages in the business of shaving, hair cutting or other work of a barber on the first days of the week,” the two officials said.
The legislation would lift this blanket prohibition and allow establishments to open their doors for business on Sundays, if they so choose.
