St. Lawrence County at risk of floods from ice jams through Saturday night

The National Weather Service has northern New York, including St. Lawrence County, under a flood watch through Saturday night.

The mild temperatures over the past couple of days have led to a rapid loss of snowpack, especially in valley locations. The runoff has contributed to river ice breakup and river rises of generally 1 to 3 feet. With thick river ice in place, in excess of one foot in many areas, the potential exists for localized ice jams and associated flooding as river ice breakup occurs," the National Weather Service said in their flood watch advisory. "Those with interests along area rivers and streams should be alert to sudden changes in river levels and localized flooding. Report any observed flooding to local law enforcement."

Snow is predicted through Saturday night, with less than a half inch expected during the day and around an inch at night. Temperatures are forecast at highs around 33 and lows around 16.
