St. Lawrence County residents will soon be able to use credit cards to pay for trash services at transfer stations.
County legislators voted in favor of allowing the use of credit card payments at a Finance Committee meeting. The measure will still need approval from the full board before it takes effect.
“Payment by credit card has become a common form of payment at many businesses and government organizations,” the resolution says. “St. Lawrence County residents should have as many opportunities and conveniences as possible to make payments.”
The county does not expect to incur a cost for providing the new payment option.
The finance committee also approved fee hikes for some solid waste items. Most of the increases will impact contractors. Items expected to increase by 50 cents each include direct haul of sludge, sewage, industrial waste and asbestos.
The City of Ogdensburg is expecting a major hike for its municipal sludge disposal from $70 to $122 per ton.
Municipal fall and spring cleanups are also slated to rise from $115 to $120 per ton.
Although approved by the Finance Committee, the full Board of Legislators will need to approve the measure before the new fees will take effect.
