St. John’s Episcopal Church in Massena will celebrate its 150th anniversary this weekend
MASSENA -- St. John’s Episcopal Church, 139 Main St., was incorporated on Sept. 15, 1869 and will celebrate its 150th birthday on Sept 15.The public is invited to the following events:
9 a.m. Sunday service, with Eucharist, with the Rev. Barbara Robinson.
2-4 p.m. Social gathering in the parish hall with cookies and drinks. Displays include a timeline showing significant events in the history of the World, Massena, and St. John’s. There will be historic photos, documents, and bios of past rectors, and time to share memories with friends and neighbors.
2:30-3:30 p.m. Church tour of windows and tapestry. Everyone knows that the stained glass windows at St. John’s are beautiful. But few of us realize the significance and history depicted by the pictures in the glass. The tour will help us appreciate their meaning. The tapestry commemorates the Armenian Holocaust, and was donated to St. John’s by Massena’s Armenian community in 1985. Armenian families have been an important part of Massena, and of St. John’s, for over a century.
The parish will celebrate the future at the church on Nov. 16 and 17, with the following events:
Nov. 16, 2 p.m. William Love, IX Bishop of Albany, will ordain Sonya Boyce to the priesthood, and install her as the church’s new priest.
Nov. 17, 9 a.m. Bishop Love will Bless and Rededicate St. John’s at the 9 a.m. service.
