Richard E. Winter Cancer Treatment Center in Ogdensburg gets $10,000 grant for care kits

OGDENSBURG — Patients starting chemotherapy or radiation therapy at the Richard E. Winter Cancer Treatment Center will soon start treatment with a new, specialized “care kit,” thanks to the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund and a $10,000 grant.

The care kits will include resource guides designed by our social workers and patient navigator to give patients the peace of mind that there is a net of assistance available to them and people to help them access it.

Also included will be items recommended by REW Cancer Treatment Center nurses informed by national guidelines, all selected because they make the experience of patients better but are not often included in insurance coverage.

The care kits will be tailored based on the patient and their treatment, but generally, they will include items such as: queasy drops, XyliMelts (an aid for dry mouth), healing ointments and creams, and gentle, fragrance-free washes and shampoos.

In addition to the creation of the care kit program, grant funds will be used to cover the cost of free low-dose CT lung cancer screenings.
