CANTON -- St. Lawrence County residents wanting to properly retire American flags can now drop off torn and tattered flags at the St. Lawrence County Court House, 48 Court St., Canton.
The New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) is partnering with NACo (National Association of Counties) to conduct a new national campaign to support flag etiquette with counties taking the lead in ensuring a dignified retirement for the U.S. flag, and allowing citizens to conveniently and respectfully recycle their flags.
An official U.S. Flag Disposal Box will be located in the area outside the county Board of Legislators’ Chambers, near the county clerk’s and treasurer’s offices on the first floor. If larger flags do not fit in the box, they can be dropped off inside the board office.
The contents of the box will be collected by St. Lawrence County’s Veterans’ Services Director and taken to American Legion Post 68 in Norwood. This group properly retires flags in a ceremony held once a year on Flag Day.
