POTSDAM -- Potsdam Central School board members approved several appointments and resignations at their April 20 meeting.

The board approved the following appointments:

• Elizabeth White, to the position of high school science teacher;

• Shona Arduine, to the position of middle school science teacher;

• Carter Jones, to the position of high school English teacher;

• Shailiandar Singh, to the position of high school social studies teacher;

• Whitney McRobbie, to the position of school psychologist.

Resignations approved included:

• Joachim VanElls, from the positions of high school social studies teacher

• Debra Gordon, from the position of reading teacher

• Helen Mace, from the position of elementary teacher

• Michael Dinan, the the position of high school counselor

The board accepted the recommendation of the superintendent to fill the vacated positions.

School board member Josh Fiske asked if the board should be trying to refill these positions because the board had earlier discussed cuts related to the school budget.

PCS Superintendent Joann Chambers noted that these positions would likely be cut unless the state provides more aid than what is being discussed now.

James Hubbard, board president, said there will be a motion to eliminate the open positions, but that will not take place until after the budget it finalized.

The district, as of now, is facing a $730,000 budget gap. Chambers said not filling the positions would be a way to save money without having to lay any staff off.
