POTSDAM – Fourth-grader Dustin Grant of Potsdam has won second place in the national Recess Rocks video contest for his ideas for combating childhood obesity.
In his video, Grant shares the “P.E. in a Bag” that his teacher lets students take home, and he encourages kids to ask their schools to make these bags available to them. The video shows him and his siblings, Derek and Dillynn, playing with the contents of the bag, which include cup stacks, a football, jump rope, Frisbee and a heart rate monitor.
The contest is part of the nationwide Recess Rocks childhood obesity prevention campaign launched by Community Health Center, Inc. The contest invited children and young teens in grades 2 through 8 across the U.S. to submit a two-minute video featuring a speech, song, dance or commercial that answers two questions: “How do you feel about the childhood obesity problem?” and “What can you do about it?”
Grant was one of three students who placed second in the contest and won a Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit Plus.
