POTSDAM -- Potsdam Central School continues to work on its re-opening plan for summer and fall.

“We really want our community to be informed,” PCS Superintendent Joann Chambers said at the May 26 school board meeting.

“Unfortunately we don’t have all the answers yet as far as school in September.”

Many employees, mainly teachers, have been working from home.

Chambers said PCS is planning to bring 11-12 month employees back in early June on a part-time basis with the hope to have them working full-time by the end of the month.

School officials continue putting steps in place for the safety of students, staff and others.

Chambers said the district has had “cleaning protocols in place for months” and have been “following CDC guidelines.”

If school resumes this fall, the district will ask employees to take their temperatures upon reporting to work. The school has purchased thermometers and a logbook will be kept.

She said anyone who has a high temperature or who is experiencing symptoms will be asked to not to report to work, or to go home.

The district will be supplying masks to employees, or they can use their own masks, Chambers said.

It is expected that Gov. Andrew Cuomo will issue guidance to schools some time in June. She said she is “eagerly awaiting that.”

Chambers added that schools will need to submit their plans of reopening to the state sometime in July.

Most decisions about reopening will be made by the governor. She said she didn’t know how much will be decided locally, or if the regional control rooms will have a say.

Chambers said she knows people are eager for the info, but there are a lot unknowns right now.

School buildings will be locked in July, which is not typical protocol, Chambers said. Visitor names will be logged, along with their phone number for possible future contact if needed.
