Potsdam Candidate Profile: Toni Kennedy says economic development and financial stability important for town

POTSDAM -- Since her initial campaign in 2018, Toni Kennedy has been an advocate on climate issues and for the future of the township.

She said she is concerned about financial stability in the town.

“I think economic development and financial stewardship is important to the voters and residents of the Town of Potsdam,” she said in a statement for this story.

“It is important to voters that local elected officials make strategic decisions on fiscal matters and that the town is financially stable,” she said.

“As an elected official, I am committed to promoting economic development within the town by supporting infrastructure projects, promoting Potsdam as a place that is welcoming to businesses, working to develop a targeted business/industry recruitment strategy, and growing the tourism industry by supporting and expanding year-round recreational opportunities,” she said.

She noted that her work with the joint town and village Recreation Committee could serve to further those aims.

“I currently serve on the Potsdam Recreation Committee where I work closely with other members of the town and village to bring new and exciting opportunities to the community.”

She has been working with the Climate Smart Communities Task Force, “and am committed to continuing to work towards making Potsdam a net-zero town. As a local elected official, I will work to decrease municipal and community energy use, work to make our community more sustainable by utilizing renewable energy for local government operations, and work to increase the climate resiliency in the town of Potsdam.”

Other issues she says are important to her are promoting civic engagement, bolstering the local economy through green initiatives and infrastructure, and expanding recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.
