Potsdam Candidate Profile: Marty Miller says his job experience makes him a good fit for council

POTSDAM – Marty Miller is emphasizing his skills and experience in the race for Town Council.

Miller feels that an elected official should have a strong work ethic, open-mindedness, and the skills of “listening, determination, and understanding. They must be able to tackle the tough issues and not be afraid of failure.

“Organization is also an important skill -- one needs to be able to have a vision and organize their thoughts and actions in ways that will help that vision become a reality,” he said in a statement.

He says he believes “better infrastructure leads to more business. Bringing more business to our area will bring with it more jobs and financial opportunities for our citizens. This is important to have so that our future generations chose Potsdam as the place to call ‘home.’ I feel that local, county and state representatives can and should be working together to improve the infrastructure of the North Country.

“Going hand in hand with infrastructure improvements is improving our clean energy. I feel that clean energy options should be pursued and incorporated into our communities.”

He said lower taxes “needs to be a top priority issue. I feel that we need to work on our property tax exempt list. We need to consider the ratio of taxed to tax exempt in our township. I think that discussions need to be had on how many tax exempt properties we have, the criteria required to obtain this classification and any modifications to criteria that can be made fairly to all those involved.”

Another issue is the Rt. 56 between Potsdam and Norwood. “I feel that this area is a prime location for future development.

“I also think that we should create and pursue more opportunities for shared services and facilities among government entities...It would be a challenge that should be taken on as the savings would be a huge benefit for our local and county budgets.”

He says he believes Potsdam “has room for growth and has an abundance of potential,” and wants the work the town council has done planning for the future to continue.
