Plumber and steamfitter apprenticeships available for St. Lawrence County residents

St. Lawrence County residents can apply for apprenticeships through the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers and Steamfitters, Local Union #73.

They will offer 10 plumber and steamfitter apprenticeships and 10 heating, ventilation, and air conditioning mechanic apprenticeships.

People can apply at Local Union 73, 31 1/2 Depot St., Gouverneur from noon to 6 p.m. on the first Monday of each month through Feb. 5, 2018.

Applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years old.

• Have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).

• Attest that they are physically able to perform the work required, which may include moderate to heavy lifting working in confined spaces, working from ladders and scaffolds at various heights and working in extreme cold and heat.

• Possess a valid driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.

• Pass a drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

• Have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.

• Purchase text materials for class at an average cost of $50.00 per year.

• Participate in an interview, if selected.

• Submit military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

• Take and pass the Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test with a minimum score of 70.
