Ogdensburg seeking input on proposed $2 million project to rehabilitate old rail bridge

OGDENSBURG -- A public meeting led by Clarkson University students will be held to design a plan for the bridge in Ogdensburg that’s expected to cost more than $2 million.

Seniors enrolled in Erik Backus’ Civil and Environmental Engineering class at Clarkson University are helping develop a design concept for the city’s proposed extension of the Maple City Trail.

The students will conduct a public meeting seeking feedback from Ogdensburg area residents, and trail users on March 1.

The meeting will be held at the Ogdensburg Dobisky Center, 100 Riverside Avenue at 7 p.m.

The Clarkson students are developing the concept design for the extension of the trail and the reuse of the bridge across the Oswegatchie River.

The city applied to the Transportation Alternatives Program in October 2016, as well as the New York State Consolidated Funding Application process in July 2016.

While the 2016 TAP awards have not yet been announced, the city did receive notification in December that Empire State Development awarded $250,000 toward the project.

The project, consisting of rehabilitation of the abandoned Penn-Central (‘Black Bridge’) railroad bridge and addition of 2,400 feet of trail, is projected to cost $2,056,000.
